Anticipatory Grief is Real
Grief following death is anticipated and accepted, and closure is possible eventually as we deal with our loss. However, there is another form of grief, that we call “anticipatory grief”, when our loved one is still with us, but slowly declining before our eyes because of dementia.
Families with loved ones who have dementia have unique situations, but all experience this kind of pre-death grief – grieving a person while they are still physically present. We call this Dementia Grief. Our support group provides a safe and confidential environment for those who are dealing with Dementia Grief and a place to share the “bad” days and the “good” days with others.
