Volunteering with the Ombudsman Progam
Advocate for Dignity, Rights, and Quality Care
The Ventura County Ombudsman Program seeks compassionate volunteers to advocate for over 9,000 elderly and disabled residents across 270 long-term care facilities in our county. Sixty percent of nursing home residents have no family or friends who visit them, making certified ombudsman volunteers their only trusted ally and extended family. We provide comprehensive training, ongoing support, and continuing education to ensure you feel confident advocating for those who need it most.
What do Ombudsman Do?
Ombudsmen are more than friendly visitors. They’re trained, certified advocates who:
- Listen to residents and help resolve concerns
- Champion residents’ rights and dignity
- Improve care in long-term care facilities across Ventura County
Our Ombudsman volunteers receive ongoing support through eight in-service meetings annually, offering continuing education credits and skill-building opportunities. We also conduct a one-year check-in to ensure each volunteer feels confident and supported in their role. Many stay with the program for seven years or more, a testament to the meaningful impact and strong sense of community.
