Raising Awareness on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – June 15
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), observed annually on June 15th, was initiated by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. WEAAD aims to promote a better understanding of elder abuse and neglect by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic, and demographic factors that influence these issues.
An estimated 5 million older Americans experience elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation each year. Many nursing home residents suffer in silence, unable to report their mistreatment or be believed when they do. Families and friends play a crucial role by watching for signs of abuse and taking appropriate action.
The Ombudsman Program is dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of long-term care residents. We can prevent elder abuse by strengthening social support structures, reducing social isolation, and protecting communities. On this day, let’s reaffirm our commitment to justice and safety for all elders, ensuring they live free from abuse and neglect. Together, we can build a society that supports and protects its aging population.
