Ombudsman Program’s Support Groups Featured in The Acorn

A recent article in The Acorn by Andre Gallagher of Senior Concerns highlights the critical importance of support services for caregivers navigating the challenges of dementia care. We’re honored that the Ventura County Ombudsman Program’s Dementia Grief Support Groups are featured as a vital community resource helping families through one of life’s most difficult journeys.

Meeting the Need in Our Community

Caring for someone with dementia brings unique emotional challenges that many don’t understand. Our free support groups recognize that caregivers need more than just information—they need connection, validation, and practical coping strategies from others who truly understand their experience.

“The isolation and grief that comes with dementia caregiving is something families shouldn’t face alone,” said Field Services Specialist MaeRetha Coleman. “Our support groups create a safe space where caregivers can share their struggles without judgment and find strength in community.”

Convenient Locations Across the County

Our support groups meet in both East Ventura County (Thousand Oaks in the Goebel Adult Community Center) and West Ventura County (in our office located in the city of Ventura), making this essential resource accessible to families throughout our region. Led by experienced facilitators, the groups provide caregivers with evidence-based coping tools, emotional support, and the comfort of knowing they’re not alone in this journey.
