October is Residents’ Rights Month 2025

Standing Together for Dignity, Choice, and Respect
Every October, long-term care communities, advocates, and families across the nation recognize Residents’ Rights Month, a time to honor the dignity, respect, and autonomy of individuals living in long-term care facilities.
This year’s theme, “Stand With Me,” warmly invites everyone to stand beside residents, lift up their voices, and ensure their rights are cherished every day, emphasizing the vital importance of supporting and protecting residents’ rights as a shared responsibility for all.
Residents’ Rights Month began in 1981 as a national observance to celebrate residents and those who improve long-term care. What started as a week-long event has now evolved into a nationwide campaign led by the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care.
For over 40 years, the Ventura County Ombudsman Program, operated by Long Term Care Services of Ventura County, Inc., has been a trusted voice for residents throughout our community. Our mission is to protect the rights, dignity, and well-being of elderly and dependent adults in long-term care facilities. Our state-certified volunteer Ombudsmen make unannounced visits to facilities, listen to residents’ concerns, investigate complaints, and help resolve issues with compassion and integrity.
Standing With Residents in Ventura County
Ombudsmen in Ventura County advocate daily for residents’ rights to privacy, choice, and self-determination. They help resolve complaints, educate families, and work with facility staff to ensure residents are treated with fairness and respect.
This year’s theme reminds us that residents’ voices must always be at the center of decisions affecting their care. “Stand With Me” calls on all of us —families, caregivers, and community members—to listen, engage, and support residents in living with dignity and independence.
